$1.6 Trillion and Counting: The Untapped Power of Black Buying Power

Black America is an economic force. With a buying power exceeding $1.6 trillion—and climbing annually—it’s clear our dollars have the capacity to transform markets, dictate trends, and shift entire industries. But while we fuel the global economy, the return on that investment within our own communities remains disproportionately low.

We are the culture that drives the sales—yet too often, we aren’t the shareholders.

A Market That Moves the Masses

From the music that shapes playlists to the style that fills runways, Black influence is woven into the fabric of mainstream consumerism. Companies know this—which is why they spend billions courting Black audiences with ad campaigns, influencer partnerships, and “diverse” branding.

Our tastes don’t just participate in the market—they set the tone for it. When Black consumers embrace a product, the ripple effect spreads far beyond our communities, influencing national and even global purchasing trends.

The Leakage Problem

Despite our massive spending power, studies show that Black dollars often leave our communities within hours of being spent. That means while we contribute heavily to the economy, little of that wealth is reinvested into Black-owned businesses, infrastructure, or generational wealth-building.

This “economic leakage” perpetuates a cycle where cultural labor and market influence don’t translate into sustainable prosperity. We remain the tastemakers but not the principal beneficiaries.

Turning Power into Prosperity

Buying power is only as influential as the strategy behind it. To transform cultural capital into

economic capital, we must:

  • Buy Black Intentionally – Prioritize Black-owned businesses and services for everyday spending.

  • Invest in Black Enterprises – Support startups, cooperatives, and community development funds that keep wealth circulating.

  • Demand Corporate Accountability – Push brands to go beyond performative marketing and invest meaningfully in Black communities.

The Generational Wealth Equation

Redirecting even a fraction of our $1.6 trillion toward our own institutions could create a seismic shift in economic equity. Imagine what could happen if more of our dollars funded scholarships, bought property, capitalized new businesses, and supported local infrastructure.

We’ve already proven we can build billion-dollar markets for others. The next step is building them for ourselves.

Our True Colors’ Perspective

At Our True Colors, we believe our buying power is more than a number—it’s a tool for liberation. We tell the stories, present the data, and amplify the strategies that help transform consumer spending into collective wealth. Our aim is to make every dollar do double duty: uplifting our culture and securing our future.

Because when $1.6 trillion moves with intention, the world moves with it.
